Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums exercised his power to break tie votes on the city council for the first time last night, in a move that sent former Planning Commissioner Michael Lighty to the port commission, the Trib reports. The council had deadlocked on Dellums’ nomination of Lighty earlier this month in a 4-4 vote. Lighty, who has a reputation for being independent and voting his conscience, will replace longtime Port Commissioner Anthony Batarse, a close friend and ally of Vice Mayor Ignacio De La Fuente.
