Zongo Junction/Terkuaz

When: Thu., Dec. 29, 8:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $15

White-boy afrobeat is a lot like experimental film, or hole-in-the-wall Chinese food places, or sex: When it's good, it's great, but when it's bad, it's ineluctably terrible in a way that can mess you up for days afterward. Fortunately for all of us, the Brooklyn-based twelve(!!)-piece Zongo Junction is really, really good: faithful to its forebears without being derivative; creative and rowdy without being over-stimulating; technically skilled without being stiff. The group is already getting some well-deserved buzz on the East Coast, after performances at the 2010 Bear Creek Music Festival, a recent tour with ToubabKrewe, and a Monday night residency at Brooklyn Bowl, but it's now heading out on a West Coast tour in support of its (fantastic) debut album, Thieves!, including a stop at Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Dec. 29. The show's also something of a homecoming, as many of the group's members started out in Berkeley High's famed jazz ensemble. It'll mess you up for days afterward -- in a good way. 8:30 p.m., $15.
