.Zola Jesus at Starline Social Club

After a three-year hiatus, Nika Roza Danilova, who goes by the name Zola Jesus, is back in business. Her fifth album, Okovi, released in early September, showcases her chillingly euphonious voice, but unlike on her earlier albums, such as The Spoils and Stridulum II, Zola Jesus sings in a more melodious style, accompanied by slower, more classically inspired music. Each track reflects on a difficult time in her life. Do ruins give power/or do they give proof, she sings in “Remains.” Danilova has been singing opera since she was 7 years old and gained popularity in 2009 as one of the best indie artists. On Oct. 16, she will perform at the Starline Social Club, revealing a sound that’s evolved away from synth-pop but with the same bittersweet, dark-wave feel she’s known for.
