For what it's worth, I think Tammerlin and Johnson are probably right to say the Hoopes fiasco is a P.R disaster for the gay marriage movement.

There probably is a moral arguement for having Hoopes removed. But tactically? I think the average person presented with this would probably think it was absurd. The fact that the guy is 97 really, really doesn't help.

Public support for Hoopes removal would be difficult to find. Half of California voted for prop 8. And I'm willing to bet even most of the people who were against prop 8 don't wish to see those who are opposed turned into a pariah class or compared to George Wallace. Everyone who supports gay marriage likely has parents, grandparents, spouses that haven't come around yet, and many of them not going to alienate those people because some folks on a blog say so.

Basically, if Hoopes' removal will give people short term satisaction: go for it. But you should know there probably will be a long term political price to pay.
