Romance, Suspense/Thriller
If a young filmmaker had made this rambling, confused story of a Romanian professor (miscast Tim Roth) who mysteriously begins growing younger after being struck by lightning, we’d congratulate him or her on the imaginative visuals and deplore the bad writing. But it’s latter-day maestro Francis Ford Coppola who wrote, produced, and directed, so he doesn’t get a pass –- other than to say that we can see what he’s trying to do with his purposely antiqued treatment of a vaguely sci-fi, spiritual plot (from a novel by Mircea Eliade), but that it lies there, dead as a mackerel. A pretty, wondrously lit mackerel. Costarring Alexandra Maria Lara and Bruno Ganz (124 min., 2007).
