Youth-market sensation Michael Cera (Juno, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) uses a pale complexion and Diane Arbus body language to maximum effect as Nick Twisp, a not-quite-so-typical teenage virgin from Oakland trying to impress a Francophile local girl (the wonderfully named Portia Doubleday) who wants to get away from her ultra-religious parents. The dialogue, by Gustin Nash adapted from C.D. Payne’s novel, resembles nothing a seventeen-year-old ever said – that’s why we like it. The secondary characters are solidly eccentric, too: Nick’s lusty mom (Jean Smart), her cop boyfriend (Ray Liotta), Nick’s perturbed dad (Steve Buscemi), a similarly horny classmate (Adhir Kalyan), etc. TV director Miguel Arteta helms, ably (90 min.).
