Not nearly as funny as Pineapple Express. A few of the makers of that weed-and-sex-joke comedy got the bright idea of putting James Franco and Danny McBride through a medieval swords ‘n’ sorcery thing, but forgot to buy enough laugh lines. Lotta monsters and fireballs, though. And the same puzzling homosexual-panic gags, mostly centering on anal penetration. The presence of Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel, Justin Theroux, and Toby Jones in the cast hardly registers at all — shoulda saved their money and bought more rubber penises. The main culprit seems to be actor-executive producer McBride, who puts his character Thadeous (jealous brother of Franco’s Fabious) up front. The strategy backfires. He can’t carry it. Directed by Pineapple’s David Gordon Green from a faulty screenplay by McBride and Ben Best. (102 min.)
Director: David Gordon Green
Writer: Danny McBride and Ben Best
Cast: James Franco, Danny McBride, Zooey Deschanel, Natalie Portman, Damian Lewis, Charles Dance, Toby Jones, Noah Huntley and Rasmus Hardiker
