Attempts to do for the German romantic poet what Amadeus did for Mozart, with limited success. Happy-go-lucky would-be bard Johann Goethe (Alexander Fehling) is law-clerking in the town of Wetzlar, circa 1772, but he’d really rather be composing verse for his beloved, farmer’s daughter Lotte Buff (Miriam Stein), the fiancée of Goethe’s superior, Herr Kestner (Moritz Bleibtreu). Picturesque but silly, with pratfalls alternating with lovelorn impulses to suicide. Director Philipp Stözl’s earlier film North Face hit its target a lot more effectively. Alexander Dydyna and Christoph Müller wrote the screenplay with Stözl. (102 min.)
