.You Write Too Long: This Week’s Feature, Bite-Sized

This week’s way long cover story profiles Berkeley’s infamous Hate Man, aka the homeless guy in People’s Park who has been saying “fuck you, I hate you” (and requiring others to do the same) for the past couple decades. If you grew up in Berkeley, chances are you probably know him or have “pushed” with him. But it turns out he’s not some crazy street person on an angry tirade: Hate says he’s developed a whole ideology he calls “oppositionalism” that he says is a way of being more transparent and up-front in relationships. Basically, it’s his way of caring — like Jesus, but with more swearing. He’s got followers he calls “oppies” and — did we mention? — he used to be a reporter for The New York Times.
