Informative documentary about radio and early-television star Gertrude Berg, whose 1950s-era TV sitcom, The Goldbergs (the title is the show’s tag line), was so popular it ushered in a “new era for Jewish mothers” and helped introduce Jewish characters to a broad American audience. Hardworking writer-star Berg (born Tilly Edelstein in New York City) was “the Oprah of her day,” which nevertheless did not spare one of the show’s actors from Red Scare blacklist troubles. A worthwhile pop-cultural history lesson by writer-producer-director Aviva Kempner (92 min.).
