In Year One, the new existential comedy from Harold Ramis, clumsy hunter Zed (Jack Black) and dull gatherer Oh (Michael Cera) flee their primitive tribe after Zed eats an apple from the Tree of Knowledge and becomes convinced he’s been chosen by God for something great. This also makes him dubious of all religions, which comes in handy since he and Oh stumble into the Book of Genesis and wind up, for periods, traveling with Cain and Isaac. Ramis’ goal is to satirize the tenets of the Old Testament, as well as underline many of the parallels between ancient and modern conflicts that arise from these beliefs, but the impact is blunted by the broadness of the approach (97 min.).
