Yanks Going the Distance

For Joe Ruscito and his high school pal Lucas Gubinski, college is freshly finished — and life in the world of pragmatic adulthood threatens to begin imminently — but not before the pair of Connecticut Yankees set out on August 7 to pedal across the country, beginning — almost — in Oakland.

Actually, they’re starting at Ocean Beach in San Francisco at dawn on Sunday, dipping their rear wheels in the Pacific to officially kick off the coast-to-coast tour. Then they’ll hustle to catch a 9 a.m. sendoff party in their honor at Bay Area Bikes, at 25th and Webster streets in Oakland. The event is public, and will be casually catered by Farley’s East coffee shop — and would be a fine time to make a donation, if you wish, to Simply Smiles, the Connecticut-based children’s charity for which the cyclists are raising funds.

Following the party, a social ride-along will accompany the journeyers as they move north along the shoreline, around Point Richmond, San Pablo, and, well, you can’t tag along forever — but you can follow their progress here. Ruscito and Gubinski expect to spend two months on their 3,500-mile ride. They must cross two high mountain ranges, a blazing desert, and the Great Plains — and eventually, Connecticut to dip their front wheels into the Atlantic Ocean.

Or else it doesn’t count.
