It shouldn't shock anyone that hip-hop's become a nostalgia-based medium, given that most of the classic hits dropped sometime between 1982 and 1994. Because they considered their music more of a craft than a commercial enterprise, old legends like Brother J of X Clan -- who preached Afrocentric sermons in rhyme form -- and DJ AfrikaBambaataa -- whose electro-funk hit "Planet Rock" remains one of the most influential songs of the last three decades -- had a lot more staying power than their Def Jam counterparts. In fact, they're still getting down today. X Clan performs with the Lifesavas this Friday, Feb. 15 (9 p.m., $17) at Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., San Francisco), while AfrikaBambaataa graces Club Mighty (119 Utah St., San Francisco) the following night on Saturday, Feb. 16 (10 p.m., $15).
