Wye Oak

When: Fri., Feb. 24, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $20

This being the twentieth anniversary of Noise Pop, shows were in particularly high demand this year (badges sold out, individual shows sold out early). It helped, of course, that the lineup includes bands like The Flaming Lips and Built to Spill. Somewhat surprising -- but totally deserved -- is the early sell-out of the Wye Oak show at The Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco). The duo from Baltimore has been around for about six years, but really surged in popularity after the release of its third album, Civilian, last year on Merge Records. The band ramped up the slightly raggedy, noisy, dreamy side of its Americana-influenced sound, resulting in something that resembles Land of Talk (especially on "Plains") or a modernized Neil Young, often playing with loud-soft dynamics. It's far meatier than the gooey electro-pop getting praise on Pitchfork. Check Craigslist for tickets. On Friday, Feb., 24, with Sea of Bees, Social Studies, and 21st Century. 8 p.m.
