Indigenous to the western region of Bali, gamelan jegog is a highly energetic type of gamelan music, performed on an ensemble of bamboo marimba-like instruments. The class will be taught by master gamelan jegog musician, I Wayan Gama Astawa, from the village of Tegalcangkring in West Bali. Students will explore dynamic interlocking “kotekan” patterns, mallet technique and the role of each instrument in the jegog ensemble.
