Adventure, Drama
A children’s adventure? From Todd Haynes? The director of Velvet Goldmine, Far from Heaven, I’m Not There, and Carol follows two seemingly unconnected characters – a hearing-impaired girl in 1927 (played by Millicent Simmonds) and a temporarily deaf boy in 1977 (Oakes Fegley) – through their parallel quests to discover the hidden bond between them. Sounds a bit labored, but Haynes, working from a script by Brian Selznick (Hugo) adapted from his novel, fashions a nostalgic fairy tale built around the American Museum of Natural History and a silent movie star played by Julianne Moore. When it works, it’s dreamlike. When it doesn’t, it’s more like a replica museum piece on a shelf. Michelle Williams appears in cameo as the boy’s mother (117 min., 2017, rated PG)
