While the world obsesses over men throwing and kicking balls of all kinds, female athletes never get the same level of attention. Go figure that women in the film industry are often shunted as well. The second annual, four-day Women Sports Film Festival tackles both inequities with a series of feature-length and short documentaries that bring true stories about female athletes to the forefront. Held at the New Parkway Theater in Oakland, the festival features films from around the world. Highlights include Girl Unbound, which follows a squash player in Pakistan who becomes targeted by the Taliban; Venus Vs., a portrait of Venus Williams during her fight for equal prize money at Wimbledon; and Supergirl, which focuses on the 9-year-old who broke a world powerlifting record.

Thursday, Sept. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 1, New Parkway Theater, 474 24th St., Oakland, WomenSportsFilm.com.
