Witness for the Prosecution

When: Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m. Continues through Oct. 19 2008
Price: $11, $18

The critic-proof appeal of Agatha Christie's whodunits ensures that the stage versions will remain community theatre staples for a long time to come. Having already done And Then There Were None two seasons ago and The Mousetrap two seasons before that, Contra Costa Civic Theatre (951 Pomona Ave., El Cerrito) moves on to Witness for the Prosecution, Christie's 1953 stage adaptation of her 1925 short story. Rather than the usual drawing-room murder mystery, Witness is a courtroom thriller, but it still comes down to murder, implausible plot twists, and the question of who, as they say, done it. CCCT's done this one before, but not since 1986. Michael Haven directs Dax Craven as the young man accused of murder of a wealthy dowager, Dana Zook as his wife upon whose testimony the case depends, and Keith Jefferds as his keen defense barrister. September 26 through October 18. or 510-524-9012.
