Comedy drama
An ostensibly comic look inside The American Family, Slipping Middle-Class Division, yields no surprises whatsoever. Jewish-American luftmensch Aidan Bloom, played by director and co-writer Zach Braff, is an unsuccessful actor and family man (with wife Kate Hudson and kids) who whiles away the time fantasizing about becoming a superhero. He’s the sort of guy who references god in every third speech. Moral: Be nice to each other before you die. Used to be you had to watch network TV to see a family comedy-drama this insipid, but now TV has gotten a lot smarter, so it’s back on the big screen. Just how much maudlin can you stand? Written by brothers Zach and Adam J. Braff. Also with Josh Gad and Ashley Greene. Two large popcorns, extra schmaltz, please (106 min.).
Director: Zach Braff
Producer: Stacey Sher, Michael Shamberg, Zach Braff, Adam Braff, Christopher Woodrow, Molly Conners, Maria Cestone, Sarah Johnson and Hoyt Morgan
