Winter Mountaineering: Basic to Advanced

When: Tue., Jan. 15, 7 p.m. 2008
Price: free

Whether you're a ski bunny, aspiring mountaineer, avid gearhead, or regular ski-lift operator who'd brave sub-zero temperatures just to spend winter in the Sierras, REI (1338 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley) has a few survival tips to help you make it through the busiest part of the season. This Tuesday, Jan. 15, Tim Keating of SWS Mountain Guides offers a slideshow presentation on winter mountaineering, complete with information on avalanche safety, snowshoeing techniques, navigation, and proper ways to use an ice ax. Part of a January winter sports series that began with a workshop on tuning and waxing your snowboard, this lecture provides all the fundamentals in an easily digestible form. 7 p.m., free. 510-527-4140
