Drama, War
A child’s World War II in occupied Holland, where coming of age is almost as terrifying as the Nazis. Fourteen-year-old Michiel (Martijn Lakemeier) is forced to stop playing games and join in the conflict when a wounded British flyer (Jamie Campbell Bower) crash lands near the village in which Michiel’s father is the mayor, and where not everyone’s motives are absolutely clear. Director Martin Koolhoven walks a fine line between shocking home-front resistance adventure and young Michiel’s point of view. Not quite up to the level of Paul Verhoeven’s war dramas, but not bad. Screenplay by Mieke de Jong, Paul Jan Nelissen, and Koolhoven, adapted from Jan Terlouw’s novel (103 min.)
