Woody Harrelson has portrayed quite an assortment of wild hares and weirdos in his film career, but in filmmaker Craig Johnson’s thoughtful character study we find the former outlaw mellowed into a crank, abruptly candid middle age, as he hits the road in search of long-lost partners and relatives – played by Laura Dern, Isabella Amara, and Judy Greer, among others. Suddenly Harrelson’s in-your-face energy doesn’t seem quite so off-putting, because he’s trying to make up for wasted opportunities before it’s too late. One of the actor’s signature roles, directed by Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) from a screenplay adapted by Daniel Clowes, from one of Clowes’ graphic novels (94 min., 2017, rated R) (K.V.)
