Re: “Oakland Officials Are Divided Over a Proposal to Create a New Department of Violence Prevention

What this article does not say is that Richmond reduced its homicide rate by more than 70%. If they can do it, Oakland can also. Since there is absolutely no credible evidence that any community in the country has reduced homicides or crime by increasing the size of its police department, why continue to fall for this fallacy. People, even the Federal Justice Department in reports recognizes that our broken, biased, unaccountable criminal justice system, including cops, CONTRIBUTES to sustain and increase crime. Unlike the Mayor and her administration, Reid and McElhaney are trying.

Re: “On Class, Race, Culture and the Anti-Trump Movement

You might have given Obama a chance but the Republicans in Congress NEVER did.

Re: “On Class, Race, Culture and the Anti-Trump Movement

US/Western Culture is again channeling our perceptions, wrongly, into an either-or paradigm. Reality is multidimensional and multi-causal. US political issues are about BOTH-AND race and class and they are largely inseparable. Bernie Sanders makes the same mistake that socialists and folks on the left have frequently made: that class is more important than race or "identity politics." He wants to draw us into a class struggle within and to reform the Democrat Party. This is a historically proven mistake and a waste of energy. Read "The Miner's Canary" for examples of how to form successful coalitions across lines of both race and class.

Re: “Oakland Mayor Schaaf and Police Seek Unproven 'Predictive Policing' Software

That Oakland and its Mayor would even consider this hocus-pocus is clear evidence of how ignorant our police department and our elected officials are about crime. Wow! Hey, Schaaf! Human behavior can not be put into a mathematical "box." You have been watching too much science fiction. This is pre-crime; it only works in the imagination. Get busy with the things that we know that work and expand them with that $100,000 plus.

Re: “Why We Oppose the Oakland Spy Center

The Mayor claims that the DAC will aid disaster recovery. Again, there is no evidence of that. History reveals that the same was said of the Vietnam era helicopters that were push on poorly administered and led cities like Oakland. After the Federal subsidy ran out, Oakland was stuck with a big maintenance and personnel cost and few takers - neither the Port or the County - to share the rescue and disaster capability costs. The Port's DAC will save the Port not the residents or businesses of Oakland

Re: “Drone Surveillance May Be Unconstitutional

Drones should ONLY be used to find and constantly monitor people who have assault weapons and such mass killing devices.

Re: “A Guide to the North Oakland Gang Injunction

Fear often makes humans stop thinking with their brains. Fear is also manipulated by popularist and politicians to no good end except the perpetuation of the politician and the expenditure of money for no good end. The overwhelming conclusion of the study of gang injunctions is that they do not work to significantly reduce violence or criminality. (That's a period.) There are alternative gang initiatives that do work. (That's a period) The police officers, who would implement this North Oakland injunction and the other 12 that Russo wants, do not want to have to name the folks first. This is Russo's Folly. It is akin to Jim Crow laws in the South; meant to solve one problem but got used for something else that was wrong and evil.
