Willing to Go There: New Works by Patricia Gillespie

When: May 22-June 23 2008

Elegant drawing, vivid color, and flawless craftsmanship make for witty evocations of the contemporary woman's world at Esteban Sabar Gallery. Bethany Ayres makes Pop paintings on plywood that juxtapose incongruous comic-book-style elements with playful figure/ground relationships. In "Colonel's Daughter," a lonely Swamp Thing strums a guitar and sings of his soulmate, who is pictured as both preteen nerd-girl and grownup babe. In "Love Me Like a Tan," bikinied sunbathers and putti/cupids execute a zero-gravity dance to romance. Patricia Gillespie fabricates wall reliefs that combine painted cutout wooden figures and upholstered backgrounds. "These Shoes Suck IV" depicts a woman brought low by her ankle-wounding high heels. Another vacuums while clad only in underwear in "X-Vision," while the sleeping heroines of the bed pieces "Topless I" and "Topless II" are ensconced in Gillespie's cozy linens. Through June 24 at Esteban SabarGallery (480 23rd St., Oakland). or 510-444-7411.
