Despite its cheesy synthesizers and generic African drums, Will Downing's 1988 cover of the John Coltrane standard, "A Love Supreme," was a critical success. Downing added melody and lyrics where originally there were none, and changed the feel from hard bop to a lustrous ballad. Though it didn't sound much like the original, critics appreciated Downing's reverence for the source material, particularly by featuring jazz great Stanley Turrentine on saxophone. Over the course of his career Downing became a consummate genre-straddler, known not only for emotionally sodden pop songs that appeal to contemporary audiences, but for frequent genuflections to his jazz forbears. His long and impressive catalog includes the hit duet "Where Is the Love?" with Mica Paris, and a velvety baritone version of the Rose Royce classic "Wishing on a Star." Downing performs Friday, Feb. 13, at Oakland's Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave.). Gerald Albright guest stars. 8 p.m., $49.50.
