Drama
Fans of veteran French auteur Alain Resnais may enthuse – or maybe not -- over the slight tale of an absent-minded early retiree named Georges (André Dussollier), his tolerant wife Suzanne (Anne Consigny), and a dentist named Marguerite (Sabine Azéma), whose stolen purse Georges finds on a parking garage floor. The film’s elusive charm rests on its characters and their slightly cockeyed points of view. Resnais (Last Year at Marienbad, Hiroshima Mon Amour) -- with help from Alex Reval and Laurent Herbiet, adapting Christian Gailly’s novel – keeps the proceedings light and lively, with a whisper of spookiness hovering over the motives of Georges and Marguerite. Emmanuelle Devos and Mathieu Amalric overload the supporting cast as a dental colleague and a policeman, respectively (104 min.).
