The free Active Music Series was spearheaded by jazz saxophonist Aram Shelton with the goal of bringing experimental and improvised music every month to The Uptown (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland). On Tuesday, Mar. 12, local outfit Wiggwaum will make a noteworthy return. What began as an improv trio composed of Randylee Sutherland, Doug Katelus, and Loren Means has changed course since Means' departure in 2011. An experimental filmmaker in his Seventies, Means would alternate between scatting and created a holy ruckus with a trombone feeding back through an amplifier, putting musicians half his age to shame. After Wiggwaum recorded a split with Michigan's Poor School, Means left to focus on his film work. Saxophonist Matt Hartman has since replaced Means, and this will be Wiggwaum's first public performance with the new lineup. Hartman is best known for his pop music projects, most recently Sic Alps, and as a touring musician backing Cat Power, but if his sax contributions to free-jazz band Total Shutdown are any indication, he should add a hectic flurry to Wiggwaum's Hammond organ and drums. With Julia Mazawa and Ritwik Banerji's Whiskey Book. 9 p.m., free.
