It's no accident that any LP bearing the imprimatur of formerly Berkeley-based singer Jonathan "Yoni" Wolf has a high chance of landing on all the hipster top ten lists. Wolf is just about the best imaginable combination of indie-scene cachet and genuine musical talent. He launched WHY?as a half-rapped, half-sung solo act, and reconfigured it as a band in 2005. Since then, WHY?has appeared in several different (but always impressive) iterations, always with Yoni on keys, his brother Josiah on drums, and Doug  McDiarmid on a variety of electronic devices. The group, since relocated to Cincinnati, produces some of the most interesting material in its genre, characterized by asymmetrical rhythms, slurry vocals, and tones that oscillate between melodic rock and computer-generated noise. It's not always catchy, but it's definitely captivating. WHY? performs Wednesday, June 2, at The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland), with The Donkeys and Josiah Wolf's solo act opening. 8 p.m., $16.
