Tyler Perry's first two movies, Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion, were so over-the-top in their gumbo of romantic melodrama and rude drag humor that they seemed to exist in their own crackpot universe. Perry has shown a little more discipline since then, though in this relationship comedy, adapted from his hit play, the restraint tends to spotlight his clumsy, formulaic writing. Like Alan Alda's The Four Seasons (1981), this is about vacationing married couples who confront their long-festering problems after one of the men unexpectedly shows up with a young babe. Perry hasn't lost his touch for stroking his loyal audience of Oprah women; his enforced happy endings are the car keys taped under your seat. With Perry, Janet Jackson, Sharon Leal, Richard T. Jones, and Tasha Smith, lots of fun as the trash-talking Madea surrogate.
