Re: “Criminalizing the Unsheltered is Not the Solution to Oakland's Housing Crisis

Let me start by saying that not all homeless encampments are the same. I wish the solution to the homeless problem we have an open was as easy as set forth in the article. Unfortunately is not as clear-cut as stated. For the most part when you have the homeless encampment in a given area, the crime increases in that area, fire hazards increase, sanitary condition get worse, is not only not safe for the residents of the encampment, but is not safe for the residents of the neighborhood . You have small and large businesses have in the deal with the increased crime, ranging from auto smash and grab, shoplifting, burglaries, and more serious crimes. I have lived in Oakland for 60+ years, i should be able to shop in my neighborhood, should be able to park my car in Oakland without having the windows smashed, of the work on a public sidewalk without having the dodge people using the sidewalk as their restrooms. I understand that not everyone in these encampments chooses this lifestyle. Some do most of them don't. Oakland needs to do something so that the majority of the people that live in Oakland or visit open can walk around Oakland in a safe clean environment.
