Whiteout offers a welcome twist on the whodunit by placing the action in the coldest, most isolated place on Earth — Antarctica. US Marshal Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) was assigned to the frigid station as a sort of R&R break from the regular grind of her job after a work-related trauma, but her peace and quiet is violated by a killer. Luckily for her, there are only twelve suspects. Unluckily for an audience expecting surprises, it’s pretty obvious who the killer is in the first few minutes of the movie. More disappointing than the lack of real suspense, however: the idea of Antarctica, of total isolation and the paranoia it fosters, is never really taken advantage of (96 min.).
