Comedy, Romance
Even if it weren’t such a charming, unexpected glimpse of contemporary South African manners and mores, Jann Turner’s romantic comedy would be notable for its own sake – how many interracial comic South African road trip movies do we get in stateside theaters? A warm-hearted but bumbling Johannesburg black man named Elvis (Kenneth Nkosi) has to travel across the country by car for his wedding in Cape Town, with numerous pitfalls, while his intended bride Ayanda (Znadile Msutwana) frets. Jodie Whittaker (as an English tourist), Rapulana Seiphemo (Elvis’ best friend), and Marcel Van Heerden (a cranky Afrikaner) add to the bubbling stew. Also a goat named George. Written by Nkosi and Seiphemo. The title refers to the local custom of flying a white flag outside the bride’s home (93 min.).
