Tim Presley’s homespun psych outlet White Fence, which plays this Thursday at the Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St., San Francisco), has morphed into a formidable live band. In fact, Presley opted to capture a live ensemble feel on his last album, For the Recently Found Innocent, instead of layering collapsing beats and squiggly guitar alone in his bedroom, like he did on earlier titles. Presley and White Fence are based in Los Angeles, but his local roots go deep. In the late 1990s, he played guitar in East Bay punk favorites The Nerve Agents. The first White Fence album appeared on Make-a-Mess Records, a small local label that anticipated what became lauded as San Francisco’s garage rock scene. Perhaps his most coveted experience was touring and recording as a member of the legendary English post-punk outfit The Fall. Mark E. Smith, the band’s notoriously difficult and crotchety leader, has yet to talk any shit about Presley — a major feat.
