Documentary
Cops everywhere hated Jim Morrison. After seeing Tom DiCillo’s witty, oblique documentary about Morrison and the Doors, you’ll understand why. Using only period footage from the years the legendary rock group was in existence (1966-1971), writer-director DiCillo captures the zeitgeist in a bottle of Jim Beam, from the superb musicianship of band mates Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore, to Morrison’s downward spiral amid the overheated Vietnam-war era. Two big take-aways: 1) Morrison’s oft-stated question: Are Americans addicted to violence? and 2) Not even Val Kilmer could upstage the real thing. Contains rare clips from Paul Ferrara’s 1969 short feature film HWY: An American Pastoral, starring Morrison as The Killer on the Road. A must for music lovers (90 min.).
