As his overbearing, self-centered father (Jim Broadbent) lies dying, a man (Colin Firth) reflects in flashback on their relationship, a series of “minor duplicities” that leads the son to silently exclaim: “Please, dad, stop breathing. You can’t come back as you were, thank god.” Firth and Broadbent give it the old college try, and there are a few apt scenes (camping trip, driving lesson, dad’s affair with auntie), but David Nicholls’ screenplay, from the memoir by Blake Morrison, is pretty snoozy. Costarring Juliet Stevenson as the author’s unbelievably deferential mother (92 min.).
