Mopey-faced youngster Onata Aprile is not exactly Shirley Temple (she doesn’t sing and dance, for one thing), but the seven-year-old actress successfully runs away with this reliably heartwarming tale of an unwanted little girl, her hideously selfish parents (Juliane Moore, Steve Coogan), and the surrogate caregivers (Joanna Vanderham and Alexander Skarsgård) who come to the rescue in a New York City of kindly doormen and waitpersons. Nancy Doyne and Carroll Cartwright’s screenplay is adapted from the novel of the same name by Henry James, rigged by co-directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel to suggest just the right amount of the dangers that Maisie successfully avoids. Cute kid, cute movie, but what’s with the “R” rating? (99 min.)
