Romantic comedy
Actor Daniel Radcliffe takes another baby step away from his Harry Potter career, but he’s hampered by almost everything in this jelly donut romantic comedy, a haphazard tale of two dorks in love. In contempo Toronto, jilted med-school dropout Wallace (Radcliffe) tries to be “just friends” with Chantry, a chatty young woman played by Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks). Neither actor is romantic lead material, however, and the screenplay – by Elan Mastai, adapted from a stage play by T.J. Dawe and Michael Rinaldi – delays the gratification well beyond the breaking point. We find ourselves cheering instead for Wallace’s abusive roomie Allan (Adam Driver) and his girlfriend Nicole (Mackenzie Davis), out of sheer boredom. Directed by Canadian Michael Dowse (Goon) (102 min.).
