What Do the Women Say?

When: Fri., March 7, 8 p.m. 2014
Muslim women’s sexuality is often overly politicized, frequently commented on by self-satisfied pundits in debates about the Middle East. So in honor of International Women’s Day, theater company Golden Thread Productions is giving Muslim women the opportunity to speak for themselves. During its annual What Do the Women Say? event, which will take place on Friday night at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley), filmmaker Maryam Keshavarz, stand-up comedian Zahra Noorbakhsh, and author Ayesha Mattu (who co-edited Love, InshAllah: The Secret Love Lives of American Muslim Women) will share their thoughts on sex and sensuality, countering common stereotypes. If the discussion leaves you feeling inspired, you can share your thoughts during an open mic at the afterparty, during which Lebanese-American soul singer Naima Shalhoub will also perform.
