Comedy drama
Other movies have tried to take an irreverent approach to the coming of age of troubled adolescent females, but this astoundingly gross – and gratifyingly smart – German comic shockeroo leaves them all in the shade. Twentysomething actress Carla Juni is a whirlwind of inappropriate bodily functions as teenage skateboarder Helen, hospitalized with an anal fissure caused by a “lady shaving” accident and hung up on her no-good parents’ recent divorce. Helen’s sexual misadventures with boys and girls may recall Italian giallo pics and H’wood exploitationers, but the story – adapted by director David Wnendt and writers Claus Falkenberg and Sabine Pochhammer from Charlotte Roche’s novel – is actually a sweet tale of a girl with more love than she knows what to do with. And besides, Ms. Juni is as beautiful as she is talkative. Nevertheless, it’s not for the squeamish (109 min.).
