The long-awaited Mandela Foods Cooperative has finally opened in West Oakland, and according to the Trib, the new natural foods store appears to be a hit. It's the only grocery store in West Oakland, and the first since Eugene International closed three years ago. Let's hope it's a success. The 20,000 residents of West Oakland have long suffered without a place to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, and have been forced to travel considerable distances for groceries or have had to depend on overpriced and unhealthy food from local liquor stores.
