Filmmaker Kelly Reichardt’s purposely damped-down melodrama shows the gradual disintegration of a homeless female drifter named Wendy (Michelle Williams from I’m Not There and Brokeback Mountain), whose car breaks down near Portland, Oregon and leaves her stranded with her dog, Lucy. Williams’ perf is strong and subtle, as is the scenario — light on the speechifying — by Reichardt (Old Joy) and Jonathan Raymond, from whose novel they adapted it. Intentionally or not, it’s an aptly cool portrait of essential American loneliness, and a humbling, completely absorbing experience. Costarring Will Patton, Will Oldham, and Wally Dalton as a sympathetic security guard (80 min.).
