Comedy drama
Immediately after he is voted in by the College of Cardinals, the new Pope (veteran French actor Michael Piccoli) goes AWOL and loses himself amid the “real world” of contemporary Rome, because he needs time to think it over. Potential audiences may also want to carefully consider the relevance of filmmaker Nani Moretti’s quiet, ever-so-slightly skeptical drama, which scores points with the appearance of a non-believing secular psychologist (played by Moretti himself), brought in to assess the new pontiff’s state of mind, who stalls for time by organizing a cardinals’ volleyball tournament in a St. Peter’s courtyard. Are we more fascinated by a peek inside the Vatican walls or by this portrait of a humble man who would rather watch a Chekhov play than pontificate? Meditate on that while watching this subtle character study. Written by director Moretti, Francesco Piccolo, and Federica Pontremoli. (102 min.)
Director: Nanni Moretti
Producer: Nanni Moretti and Domenico Procacci
Cast: Michel Piccoli, Jerzy Stuhr, Renato Scarpa, Franco Graziosi, Camillo Milli, Roberto Nobile, Ulrich von Dobschutz, Gianluca Gobbi, Nanni Moretti, Margherita Buy, Leonardo Bianca and Camilla Ridolfi
