We Funk

When: Thu., March 1, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $5

"Super heavy funk" could certainly be a catchall for a number of records minted in the Seventies, notable for their rubber-band bass lines, oft-sampled horn sections, and second-line tambourine rhythms. Local DJ Joe Quixx offers a few examples on the Facebook event page for his next super heavy event at The Uptown Nightclub (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland). Among them: A brassy 1973 Skull Snaps track called "It's a New Day," noted for its snapping bass groove and peppy guitar riffs. (It's also worth noting that Skull Snaps used the refrain Step to the back of the bus about two decades before Outkast pilfered it.) He also included the "Parade Strut" conducted by J.J. Johnson, and cut for the 1974 motion picture soundtrack to Willie Dynamite, a blaxploitation film about a New York pimp trying to conjoin his interest in social work with his commitment to free enterprise economics. Quixx will certainly have more throwbacks in the queue when he hits the stage with co-host Type One, this Thursday, Mar. 1. 9 p.m., $5.
