Re: “Letters for January 9, 2008

Not withstanding an acriminous letter by a Mr Kairys attacking me for my views on global warming, my assertions still stand.

Unbeknownst to Mr. Kairys there was a temperature measurement adjustment made by NASA last summer.

Apparently there was a glitch in the data measured after 1999 in that they were not adjusted to allow for times of the day. ( Ref: Gavin Schmidt, NASA, Real Climate "1934 and all that", Aug 2007). The correction reduced the 2000-2006 by .15 degrees Celsius resulting in new conclusions.

The new conclusions are :

The hottest year on record is 1934, not 1998;

The third hottest year on record was 1921, not 2006;

Three of the five hottest years on record occurred before 1940; and

Six of the top 10 hottest years occurred prior to 90 percent of the growth in greenhouse gas emissions during the last century.
I'm also taken to task for being an amateur for which I do not apologize. Amateurs such as myself and other readers of the Express can keep abreast of these things with the convenience of the Internet. It is not difficult to spot year by year inconsistencies on global warming despite pompous proclamations.

Finally Mr. Kairy's view that the Express should censor my letter because it contains "erroneous" information with which he does not agree betrays a misunderstanding of freedom of the press.
