That's Jackie Earle Haley underneath the sock mask with the ever-shifting ink stains on it, as Rorschach, one of the antsy masked avengers trying to deal with a renegade fellow superhero in 1985, during Richard Nixon's fifth term as president (huh?). It's a satire for people who read too many comic books, adapted from the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, and written by Moore, with splendiferous visuals and loads of the old ultra-violence — but at more than 2 1/2 hours it feels eternal. Costarring Billy Crudup as the naked blue guy, Malin Akerman as the girl in the latex bodysuit, Matthew Goode as the David Bowie-like evil genius, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the hater we're supposed to love to hate. Circuitous screenplay by Alex Tse and David Hayter. Director Zack Snyder murdered ancient Greece in 300. In Watchmen, it's 20th-century America. Maybe he should try dinosaurs next (162 min.).
