Watain

When: Wed., Nov. 17, 7:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $17, $20

Stateside, black metal bands have gained notoriety by incorporating other stylistic elements into the BM template. But many Scandinavians still adhere to the genre's classic tropes: corpse paint, distortion, blast beats, tremolo picking, posing in cemeteries, etcetera. Sweden's Watain has been one of the more successful bands to do so. Aesthetically, this tranlates into shredded clothing, the aforementioned corpse paint, and blood and animal parts in its live show. Musically, the band channels crusty punk rock in the vein of early Darkthrone -- i.e., super-catchy melodies, head-bangable tempos, and depraved vocals from singer Erik Danielsson. The band's latest, Lawless Darkness, is the most accessibly produced of its discography, though it's still in line with the band's past work. Classic thrash riffs appear on "Reaping Death," while blast beats, half-time breakdowns, and start-stop riffs make "Total Funeral" a Watain classic. Despite how seriously the band takes its outlaw status, or how formulaic its image and sound may seem, the real appeal is just how fun its music is. Animal lovers, vegans, and those averse to blood, you've been warned. At the DNA Lounge (375 11th St., San Francisco) on Wednesday, Nov. 17, with Goatwhore and Black Anvil. 7 p.m., $17, $20.
