Let's face it: we're all depressed, anxious, and weary as hell. Instead of self-medicating, turn to black metal, which for decades has embraced the darkness of the world, no matter what your stock portfolio looks like. Now in its tenth year, Uppsala,Sweden's Watain has remained steadfastly dedicated to purist black metal: grinding, driving guitar riffs; dark guttural vocals; and technical precision splattered in blood. There isn't an ounce of light in the band's music to cling to -- no cheesy flourishes or dual guitar solos -- so don't expect any chuckles out of this display of extremism. Watain's stop in Oakland in support of its most recent album, Sworn to the Dark, comes at the tail end of its two-year-long Fuck the World tour, so expect the band to be well-greased. With Withered, Book of Black Earth, Horn of Dagoth, Necrite, and Elk on Friday, Oct. 17 at Oakland Metro (630 3rd St., Oakland). 7 p.m., $15-$18.
