Re: “More Bands Are Chasing Fewer Bucks

Interesting article but it's Piero's comments that I find most interesting. I thi it's important to also note that there are independent promoters active in this besieged market, notably Another Planet Entertainment has the Greek Theater Berkeley contract and the Fox Oakland. They're Bill Graham Presents vets which in a classic irony means that having worked for a dedicated monopolist (Graham) they now find themselves competing against a much larger beast. There's also the group behind Slim's and GAMH in SF, and the soon to be a music venue UC Theater in Berkeley. There are also handfuls of club promoters whose work goes largely unappreciated, who use word of mouth, the Internets and any print media they can manage, to publicize shows to what is currently a mainly apathetic public. Silver lining: this is a good time to see shows by artists who completely blow away a tiny crowd in a small club with something infinitely more exciting than the $100 ticket packed with gray beards down the street. It happens every week in the bay area. People have not stopped making great music. They have not stopped recording and performing it. Nor have they given up on their dreams of exposing it to more than ten adoring fans in a club five miles under the proverbial "radar." The "radar" has gone up so as as to no longer matter as a source of information or entertainment. And, according to Piero's research, a large swath of said "radar" belongs to right wing fundamentalist nutballs.
