Re: “Does Crime Create Conservatives?

So did the kids on the AC Transit bus have handguns or not? The story doesn't say whether any of the three who were arrested were armed, or even charged. If they were, in fact, "packing," were they carrying firearms or airsoft pistols? Were you afraid the facts would wreck your nice little narrative?

Re: “Party 2 Nite. R U Going?

Sorry, India has PLENTY of violent crime, largely because of poverty and corruption.

Check out government stats here:

Then go read Maximum City by Suketu Mehta.

http://www.suketumehta.com/

Gangs run Mumbai. If you have a business dispute with somebody, it's not uncommon to hire a gang to kill them because the courts are so backlogged. When the gangs get too out of hand, the cops hunt them down and kill them, because the court system is broken.

All major cities have crime problems tied to the underground economy (drugs, prostitution, extortion, what have you). The more poverty you have, the higher the stakes are in the underground economy, and the more willing people are to kill to protect their slice of the pie.

Many kids who are into "thug culture" are not living in poverty and not participating in the underground economy. They are just emulating their heroes -- rap stars who make up 90 percent of the stories they tell about their exploits so they can sell records instead of risking their asses on the streets.

If everyone had access to good schools and decent jobs and we legalized drugs and other vices, we could say goodbye to most of this nonsense, like the 10 year old kid who got shot taking piano lessons the other day by the guy holding up the gas station.

We can't just hire more police and build more prisons and fill them up with nonviolent drug offenders. We have to fix the underlying problems, or we'll become Mumbai or Rio.

Those problems do not justify thuggish behavior and society should impose harsh penalties on those who inflict violence on others. Threats of violence are also considered criminal acts and for good reason.

We must to maintain an effective police force and court system so that those who feel justified in resorting to violence are removed from society at large.
