Wall to Wall

When: Fri., Nov. 30, 8 p.m. 2007
Price: $3-$5

When it's not packed with gutter punks and crusty Dumpster divers bopping their heads to the bruising, hair-trigger guitar sounds of a garage power trio, 924 Gilman looks like a veritable mausoleum. The walls form a de facto archive of EastBay punk rock since 1987, spray-painted with names of now-obsolete groups like Sweet Children (precursor to the famed Green Day), the Criminals, and Screw 32. But save for some old historical stuff that's protected by plastic coating (mostly the tags located high up over the basketball net), Gilman is by no means an inviolable space. Rather, it's a communal beautification project that's subject to constant transformations. This Friday, Nov. 28, a group of local artists -- including large-scale oil painter Ariel Awesome, zine publisher Joey Alone, and graphic novelist Cristy Road -- will paint the entire club black and add a fresh coat of art. Dubbed Wall to Wall, this one-night only wheat paste, stencil, and mural showwill also feature live music by Strip Mall Seizures, Grey Daturas, and Kill Elephant, plus a vegan feast by the Thursday Night Baking Collective (which hosts a cafe night at 924 Gilman every first Thursday). Each artist will have prints for sale. 8 p.m., $3-$5. 924Gilman.org
